From the Excerpts of Prof. K. Natarajan’s Autobiography : The Old Student’s Association of Stanley Medical College though was started in 1952, it was decided in 1972 to conduct the Old Students’ Day every year during last Sunday of January. A resolution was passed in the Old Students’ office bearers meet. The Old Students’ office was then located in the room below the stair case leading to the first floor of main college building . From then on, this function was celebrated regularly on the last Sunday of January every year. |

Old Students’ Association of Stanley Medical College was started by Dr. M. Viswanathan M.D. in the year 1952. Guiding the Undergraduates in academic as well in various Extra-curricular activities was the main purpose of this association. In 1952 Dr. Nemiraja M.D. DGO. – an alumnus ( 1942 Batch ) started a Rural Medical and Social service activity at Alamadhi Village – a suburb of Madras City and clubbed it with our college and Old Students’ Association.
Dr. Sam G.P. Moses M.D., Dr. Arcot Gajaraj M.D. DMRD., Dr. S. Kalyanaraman M.S. M.Ch. ( Neuro Surgery ), Dr. Jeyanthi Ramarao M.D., Dr. Kailasam M.D. Dr.C.S.Ramachandran M.S., Dr. Pandurangan M.S. DO., Dr. Venugopal M.D.. Dr. James Arul Raj M.D., were actively involved then in the Association work. In late 1980s Dr. Adalarasu M.S. DLO., Dr. GnanaSekaran.M.D. DMRT., Dr. R.M. Boopathy M.D. DM ( Neuro ) and Dr. P.Darwin M.S.were actively conducting the Association. From Mid 1990s Dr. Dinakar Moses MBBS DLO, Dr. M.D. Selvam M.D. and Dr. R.S. Muralidharan M.D. took charges of Alumni activities and registered our association as Stanley Alumni Association in 2003, and were actively leading various Alumni Activities. From 2007 onwards Dr. Dinakar Moses , Dr. P. Darwin and Dr. R.S. Muralidharan were involved in organizing various Alumni Activities. Following the retirements of Dr. M.D. Selvam , Dr. Dinakar Moses, Dr. P. Darwin, ( all 1972 Batch ) and Dr. R. S. Muralidharan ( 1975 Batch ), the Alumni activities are currently executed by Dr. C. Anbarasu ( 1969 Batch ) as Presdient, Dr. A. Ramalingam ( 1992 Batch ) as Secretary and Dr. G. Chandrasekar ( 1996 Batch ) as Treasurer.
Every year Last Sunday of January month is celebrated as Alumni day at their Alma mater at Chennai, Coimbatore and Dindugal. Parallely overseas Stanley Alumni in U.S., U.K., Malaysia and Australia also celebrate the Alumni day.
The current Alumni activities worth mentioning are : the green hand project, the Rural Medical and Social service league, sponsoring the undergraduate education of needy students of this college and the activities of Stanley Alumni Trust which is to offer scholarship to our Undergraduates in the RESEARCH, EDUCATION and SERVICE – the Motto of Stanley Medical College.
CONTRIBUTIONS OF STANLEY ALUMNI TO OUR ALMA MATER
Stanley Alumni Association donated a Micro Bioptome worth of Rs. 30000 to the pathology department when Prof. A. Sundaram was the Head of the Department of Pathology in the year 1999. In the same year our association donated Anatomy Dissection Picture table worth of Rs. 10000 to the Anatomy department when Dr. Sudha seshaian was the Head of the department. Dr. Dinakar Moses in his personal capacity and with the help of his 1972 batch Alumni, sponsored the bills Undergraduate students College fees, Hostel mess bill and medical books since 1998, for many years. He was instrumental for the formation of Stanley Alumni Trust in 2014 with the aim of sponsoring poor but intelligent undergraduate medical students mess bill from second d year to Final Year M.B.B.S. In 2001 Dr.R.S. Muralidharan ( 1975 Batch )donated 3 Wooden lockers imported from Thailand, to Duty Assistant quarters worth of Rs. 30000 ( 10000 each ). On 27th January 2002, the money ( Rs. Eight Lakhs ) collected for the celebration of Golden Jubilee of our Alma mater by the Golden Jubilee Commemoration Committee headed by Dr. M. Krishnamoorthy M.D. ( Alumnus and the owner of M.K. Nursing Home – Tondaiyarpet, Chennai ), from, the then faculties of Stanley Medical College and our Alumni members, was spent to modernize the Examination Hall over the SPM department with false roofing and 8 Air Conditioners. This hall has been named as Modernized Seminar hall with a seating capacity of 600 members, where most of the Academic meetings are held, even today. In the same year the grandson of Sir George Frederick Stanley visited our Alma mater and donated a Podium in memory of his Grandfather – Sir George Frederick Stanley, to this Modernized Seminar Hall. In 2003, when Prof.Dr. Siddhan after assuming the post of Dean Stanley Medical College on 12th June 2003, allotted the Ground floor of UGs building ( where Days’ scholars stay ) by the side of our Silver Jubilee Auditorium, to our Alumni as Official Alumni office. Dr.M.D. Selvam ( 1972 Batch ) due his close association with Public Work Department of Stanley Medical College made the floor the Floor, a tiled one and the walls pasted with wall papers and personally donated 25 Plastic Chairs, wire Knitted 6 Steel Chairs , 2 steel Beauros and 3 ( 2 Wooden and 1) steel tables with drawers and locks ) In the year 2004, our association donated a fine wooden Board with replaceable Slots ,depicting the teaching faculties list as per MCI Norms to the Department of Medicine displayed near the Cardew Ward at a cost of Rs. 75000, for the purpose of MCI inspection in 2005. The 1958 Batch under the leadership of Prof. Dr. B.R. Nammalwar, the Peadiatric Nephrologist and Dr. Rabindranath – owner of Dr. Rabindranath Hospital, Ambattur – during their Golden Jubilee meet in 2008 has donated 10 computers to Stanley Medical College Library for the Students use. The 1968 Batch in 2008 during their 40th year Reunion donated a LCD Projector to Physiology Lecture Hall mounted down the roof. In 2009, Dr. Dinakar Moses ( 1972 Batch ) in the capacity of warden, made the TV Room of the Student’s Hostel as the Modern Library – air conditioned it, collected many Medical Books and to read comfortably with Costly Chairs and tables donated by many different batches of Stanley Alumni. 1987 Batch, during their Silver Jubilee reunion, in 2012, well organized by Dr. Lenin – Ortho surgeon from Coimbatore and Dr. Venkatesan Casualty Medical Officer from Stanley, donated a Modernized Stretcher and 2 Wheel Chairs to Casualty , 2 LCD Projectors to our Alma mater. In 2012, the 1976 Batch headed by Prof. Dr. Balasubramaniam M.D., the Head of the Department of Physiology, had modernized the Physiology Lecture Hall with a Smart Board, a new LCD Projector , a Lap top Computer and refurnished the seats and uplifted the face appearance of the Lecture hall of the Physiology Department. In 2015, the 1981 Batch headed by Dr. Geetha – ARMO of Stanley Hospital, similarly, had modernized the SPM lecture hall with a Smart Board, refurnished the seats and uplifted the face appearance of the Lecture hall at a cost of Rs. 8 lakhs. The 1985 batch had donated Computers and wi-fi internet connections to our New Library in January 2016, on our Alumni day. In July 2017, Dr.R.S. Muralidharan ( 1975 Batch ) has donated RS 25,000 towards the First Prize of the Pathology Intercollegiate Quiz Competition held by the department of Pathology, Stanley Medical College, Chennai-1. NB: Details of contributions made earlier from 1952 until 1996 were not available with the Alumni now. Please update any contributions made before or after the formation of Alumni. Makkal Thilagam M.G. Ramachandran, attended the Arts Festival in the year 1977, and this was his official first function, after assuming Charges as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Dr. Ajmal Hussain ( 1972 Batch ) was the Arts Secretary then and Prof. Dr. P. Narendran M.S. M. Ch ( Neuro ) the then Dean of our Alma mater was instrumental to bring him to our College. MGR donated a Govt. Bus for Rural Medical and Social Service work done by our students at Alamadhi Village, Near Red Hills, Chennai. This service is going on even today. |
