Vilayanur S. Ramachandran
Renowned neuroscientist known for research on visual perception, phantom limbs, and synesthesia. Invented the mirror box therapy for treating phantom limb pain. Director at the Center for Brain and Cognition, UCSD. Awarded the Padma Bhushan (2007) and Henry Dale Medal (2005). Recognized as ARCS Foundation's Scientist of the Year in 2014.
Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy
Founder of Aravind Eye Hospitals, revolutionizing eye care in India. Pioneered outreach eye camps, blindness rehabilitation, and ophthalmic training programs. Known for performing 100+ cataract surgeries per day despite his arthritis. Honored with the Padma Shri (1973) and multiple international awards in blindness prevention. Subject of a Google Doodle and theatrical tribute on his birth centenary (2018).
Professor Ramaswami Venkataswami
Established the first Plastic Surgery and Hand Injury Department in India at SMC. Introduced microsurgery techniques for hand reconstruction in India. Recipient of the Padma Shri (2019) for his contributions to plastic surgery. Served as head of his department until his retirement in 1991.
Dr. Palanivelu
Developed "Palanivelu’s technique" for esophagectomy and numerous laparoscopic innovations. First to perform laparoscopic Whipple operation and colorectal cancer resection. Winner of Dr. B.C. Roy National Award and International Olympic Silver Medal in Surgery. Recognized globally for advancing laparoscopic and cancer surgery techniques.
Dr. Mohamed Rela
World-renowned liver transplant surgeon listed in the Guinness Book for transplanting a liver in a 5-day-old infant.
Pioneered split liver and auxiliary liver transplants in India.
Has performed over 6,000 liver transplants globally.
First Asian President of the International Liver Transplantation Society (2022).
Dr. Prathap C. Reddy
Founder of Apollo Hospitals, transforming healthcare access in India. Trained in cardiology in the UK and USA; held notable positions in research. Honored with Padma Bhushan (1991) and Padma Vibhushan (2010). Recognized for his humanitarian contributions and awarded by the Lions Club.
Dr. Mirudhubashini Govindarajan
Director of Women’s Center, Coimbatore, specializing in fertility management. Pioneering specialist in MRgFUS treatment for adenomyosis and fibroids in Southeast Asia. Received several awards, including Lifetime Achievement Award by The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Noted for extensive research and gold medal distinctions during her medical training.
Dr. Lalitha Kameswaran
First Vice-Chancellor of The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. First female Director of Medical Education in Tamil Nadu. Known for her mentorship, inspiring future medical researchers like Dr. V. Mohan. Awarded the Dr. B.C. Roy Award for eminent medical teachers (1983).
Dr. Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran
Served as Medical Examiner in high-profile cases, including O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson. Known for contributions to forensic pathology in the United States. Amended Natalie Wood's death certificate to reflect "undetermined factors."
Dr. Mathrubootham
